Corundum-Ruby Cabochon - 8.4 x 6.7 mm Oval

This exceptionally rare, high-grade natural corundum (var. ruby) originates from Hopedale, Newfoundland and Labrador, sourced from lapidary rough ethically hand-mined by local prospector Edmund Saunders. Hand-cut and polished in my Saskatoon lapidary studio, this freeform oval cabochon stands out as a top-tier specimen from this locality, displaying deep reddish-plum to magenta tones that shift depending on lighting conditions. Unlike the more granular material typical of this find, this gemstone exhibits slight asterism and strong pink hexagonal zoning. As the stone is moved, this zoning creates a dynamic flash of light that beautifully sweeps across the surface. Under ultraviolet light, the stone reveals a vivid fluorescence highlighting its chromium-rich geochemistry.
