This unique corundum-ruby cabochon is a deep reddish-purple colour, with fine specks of pyrite. The lapidary rough originates from Hopedale, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, found by local prospector, Edmund Saunders. The material has been shaped into a freeform, pear or drop-shapped cabochon measuring 13.7 mm tall, 7.9 mm wide, and 4.0 mm thick, with a total weight of 3.40 carats. The stone fluoresces vividly under UV light.
